| What to do with a birdcage that just screams 50's? I found this one at a goodwill for 10.00? Why place a glass handpainted bird in the cage, cover the bottom with vintage jewerly, drap a vintage Hong Kong Shell Purse from the top, along with a couple vintage ties! In the back, on the floor you will see two retro albums, one is for teaching your canary how to sing. The other album has great graphic details of the Twist! Mount the covers on your wall for an added touch! I plan to do just that, when I get around to it. Birdcages are great for trailing vines, mood candles, or lighting....and of course, a real parakeet! |

| Extremely popular was the domestic parakeet bird, eveyone had a pet parakeet! Parakeets were all the rage and a favorite bird of the 1950's, 60's. Many Saturday's it was considered a treat to go to the local F. W. Woolworth's. The biggest treat were the fish and birds. Mom would take my sister and I out for lunch. We climbed up on a stool at the lunch counter, have a hamburger, french fries, and a soda. I loved sitting at the lunch counter. I can still smell the french fries and they had the best ice cream sodas. My fondest memories are of the clinking glasses at the lunch counter and the friendly chirping of the parakeets in the pet department. I always chose my seat at the counter carefully -- so as I could see the birds as I ate. Finally, mom had to keep up with the Jones and purchase two parakeets for us. We had one green and one blue parakeet. Even still have the parakeet training record from that time period. Now this brings back memories. |

| I can't wear these size 3 pink vintage high heel shoes, but I sure wish I could. They have a see through hard plastic heel and little glitter spots around all the edges. Wow, these are so small the they will look hot sitting in an old hat box that has been mounted to the wall. Just add a strand of vintage pearls. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Hey, that's me! Chris. Hidding beneath a great 1960's or late 50's Orange Hat with netting and an orange rose! Check out those Jackie O sunglasses. Very retro and as orange as the hat. Yes, I had to show off the freshly picked roses from my garden. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Some days you just hit the jack pot when it comes to finding great retro items at thrift shops. Today started out a little slow and then ended with a trashy treasure picking shopping cart of great finds! First there was the cancer shop across from Sack and Save on Main Street. They are open Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.. The hours are not long and the store is packed, so you have to come early and be prepared to run through quickly. There I found an old pair of gardening shears. Nice green handle with just the right amount of flaking. Only 2.00! There will be used both as a gardening tool and a decoration for the gardening shed. Yes, this will be for sale at the Flea Market this Sunday, September 5, 2004. The second charity thrift shop I stopped in was a store at the corner of High Street and ....I just can't remember the intersecting street. Will have to let you know in another blog. There I found a wonderful vintage purse hide up high on a shelf. I ask if the purse was for sale and they quoted me a price of 25 cents. I felt so guilty that I gave them 1.00 for the purse. You will find this purse at the 23 Southbound Flea Market tomorrow for sale in our booth. This vintage purse is cute with it's geometric designs in a velvet of sorts. Then I went to Volunteers of America in Circleville, and I filled a shopping cart. An old Mexican Sombrero, you use to find these in every teenagers room in the late 50's, early 60's. I remember my cousins having one big blue one. This vintage sombrero is black, yellow, and has tons of glitter. There as a vintage cake plate and cover. Now these are still easily located and I don't pick them up unless there is something unique about the cake cover. This one happens to have a very nice glass knob on top, the patina is right - a nice country green, and I just loved the distressed look. Also there were two antique plates from England that were just the same country green as the cake plate. Both will compliment each other in style and color. Yes, they will be at he booth this weekend. I just love to decorate with these old vintage finds. Just create a little scene in your home, maybe off in one corner or do a whole room in vintage. Bringing back the past seems comforting, safe, and warming. Really makes a home a home. |

| When decorating with vintage, try collecting pieces from the same time period and with the same color palette. It helps when making an arrangement. I still have the cake carrier. I love the glass knob on top of the carrier! You really need to take a weekend, go "flea marketing", "yard sailing" or even "dumpster diving" to search for your own buried treasures. |

| A nice Vintage Chenille Bedspread for a twin bed was purchased for one dollar. Great peacock decorations in the raised pattern. The details of these lovely chenilles were varied and many were in wonderful colors. This one was not faded at all and only one little hole which was easily patched with new iron on materials from a local fabric store. Now that is a way to make a bed. |

| Adorable with the brightly colored tufted chenille Peacock bed spread. Tuffed heart decorations surrounding the bottom of the bedspread with 3 little flowers in the middle. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| What can you really find in the search for vintage items at a Goodwill or Thrift Store? A lot of old vintage items are found there. All you have to do is search. Lots of vintage kitchen pottery, nic nacks, and any I find, you will find on this page. For the kitchenware, I like nesting bowls, pyrex, fiesta, depression glassware, corningware, and most anything vintage. |
