Vintage Chick's Head Vases and other flower vases!
Like I always say, you never know what you will find until you look.

WW2 seemed like a bad dream, when America settled into the late 1940's 1950's for those "happy days", when everyone had a job, money was easy, ice-cream was at the local soda shop, top 45's were the hit among teenagers and dad had extra to buy mom some flowers from the local florist.

These were called ceramic planters or head vases, sometimes called florist ware.

Headvase
A mint Lady with Hat Head Vase, found In the past, head vases were used for a little vase to put flowers in.
She has no problems, no crazing that I can see, no cracks, no chips, no defects that I can find at all.  Marked simply, Japan on the bottom
Price 150.00
Lady Headvase without Hat
Even the pearl earrings worn on both vintage ladies were intact.  The pearl necklase is just so cute on the vintage elegant lady above.  She does have some mild crazing, very mild, you need to look closely to see it.  Right eye lash looks to have been repaired.
Underneath, in the back, there is a chip out.  Does not affect the display.
Marked - Bedford Ohio on the bottom
Vintage Headvase
Poodle
How is this for hot! A 1950's pink spaghetti poodle and a graceful hand holding an elegant vase.  A vintage handkerchief is tucked inside the bud vase.
The hand vase is in very good condition, for 150.00, very elegant.  About 6" tall, and it apears to have a tiny mark on the bottom in the shape of a bee?   I could be wrong, because it is very tiny and I don't have a magnifying glass.
There is a line of crazing on the back on the vase part, right near the index finger.  I think the line goes through the vase, so it may be a crack, but it runs near the finger, not where the finger attaches, a little above that.  Otherwise, this hand vase is in mint condition, the above mentioned is all I can see wrong.

Pink Spagetti Poodle has major crazing, but otherwise in perfcet condition, so if the crazing doesn't bother you, she is 35.00.  She is a little less then 6" tall....about 5" tall
Like I always say, you never know what you will find till you look.  Take your time, browse around, look through everything.  Who knows what vintage treasures you can uncover.
My mom took us to Kresky's, a local five and dime for shopping and I remember seeing these little head vases there. Nestled among the little handkerchiefs and fold out fans, were these elegante vases.

She would buy fans for use in church services. Sitting on the wooden pews during the hot summer Sundays, it was a blessing when mom would pull out one of those colorful fans to fan us........
Many of these head vases were made in Japan, but our country made many of the head vases too. There were companies like Roseville, Royal Copley, Royal Haeger, Shawnee Pottery, and Weller are a few I know of. Many were located in my state of Ohio. Mom use to drive to Roseville in Northern Ohio about once a year to purchase items to sell in their truck stop gift shop.

Head vases were made by the thousands, everyone copied someone else's. The ones to catch on were the elegant, fashion model look. Adornments like little faux-pearl necklaces and earrings, cute hair bows, and long eyelashes were on most vases. Then you can't forget the 1950's glamorous movie stars, I've seen Marilyn Monroe. It wax common to see head vases with a graceful hand softly touching the face. This was elegant and the shoppers love them. My two little girls to the right have pear earrings and a pearl necklace.

By the late 1960's the head vase fashion gave way to other things.

Now in 1999, these head vases are hot collectibles again, reminding us of what we once had.  You just have to look for it.
